Philips Cinema 21:9 widescreen TV to launch
January 16, 2009 by Insider Staff · 1 Comment
Philips knows what it’s doing when it comes to home theatre. And if the Philips Cinema 21:9 ultra widescreen television is anything to go by, then it looks like turning our lounges into IMAX-style super-cinemas is the future.
The Philips Cinema 21:9 ultra widescreen television is a 56-inch monster of a telly that’s got the company’s fabled Ambilight system to improve your viewing. It’s making its debut at a Philips event in no less than two weeks, before shipping around Europe (starting in Germany, Belgium and France, before making its way to good, old Blighty). But why are we so excited about it? Well, Philips is actually introducing a new apect ratio. Rather than your usual 16:9, this bad boy has an AR of 21:9. You may have guessed that, though, from the name.
What that 21:9 ratio means is the elimination of those black lines that sandwich your picture. You see, this screen won’t waste one inch of the display. Philips is attempting to reproduce exactly what you get in the cinema. Minus the Dean and Pearl commercials, of course.
Pricing is still unknown at this time, but with the screen launching on January 29, we don’t have long to wait for this cinema-style TV to hit our lounges. Now you just have to persuade your mum to come round with bags of popcorn and El Presidente hotdogs. What? She already does that? Shame on you!
