Broadband access for everyone by 2012
January 29, 2009 by Insider Staff · 1 Comment
Every British home should have access to broadband with minimum download speeds of 2Mbps in time for the Olympics in 2012. That’s the opinion as outlined by Lord Carter (the communications minister) in his report on digital Britain, and endorsed by Gordon Brown at a local government conference today.
It’s a smidgeon of good news from the Prime Minister in these depressing financial times, re-affirming that Britain won’t be left behind in the digital age. It won’t be cheap, though. According to The Telegraph, Downing Street is expected to insist that the BBC use some of its £3.5billion annual licence fee income to help fund the project.
Currently around 40 per cent of British households are without broadband and some don’t even have the infrastructure to implement it. This will give the government the added opportunity to help instigate the installation of “next-gen” broadband with speeds in excess of 50mbps, made publicly aware after Virgin’s 50MB broadband service went live recently.
Good news for the digital sector then, that’s assuming we’ve all still got homes to live in in 2012 and haven’t been kicked out for late mortgage repayments…
