Microsoft employee says new Zune this year
April 7, 2009 by Insider Staff
Microsoft employee Brian Seitz has announced that the company will be introducing new Zune portable media player hardware in 2009 – via his Twitter feed, of course!
While his method of product announcement (a tweet reading “new zune hardware this year”) is surprising, what’s perhaps more surprising is the fact that Microsoft is releasing a new piece of Zune hardware at all. The music/video player has not performed well against the far superior iPod touch, and its lack of success has meant that Microsoft hasn’t even launched it outside of the US and Canada.
It had been thought that Zune would be steered into a software application integrated into Windows Mobile phones (something which is still possible), but this tantalising tweet suggests that Microsoft isn’t giving up on the hardware just yet. What we don’t know is what form the hardware will take – it could be a mobile phone, a video-centric player or a smaller music-centric player. Looks like we’ll have to wait a bit longer to find out what Microsoft has got up its sleeves.
