Sky broadcasts UK’s first 3D event!

April 3, 2009 by Insider Staff

Sky HDSky is breaking boundaries again. Not content with its popular HD service, it’s already concentrating on providing 3D broadcasts for the upcoming 3DTV revolution, starting with yesterday’s first live 3D broadcast – a live gig by Keane at Abbey Road. And the good news? No glasses necessary!

Sky transmitted the first domestic 3D broadcast in the UK to a Hyundia 3D-ready telly via its satellite network and a Sky HD set-top box. The fact that it worked means that people with existing Sky HD boxes won’t need to upgrade to receive the broadcasts… they’ll just need to upgrade the telly!

Sky broadcasted the show, featuring Keane in no less than three different ways. The first was from the satellite transponder to the Hyundia TV. Next, the live broadcast was watched in 3D at a cinema kitted out with the necessary 3D gubbinry. And finally there was a live 3D webcast so Keane could be enjoyed by anyone with an internet connection.

This is just further proof that the 3DTV revolution is in full swing and coming to a lounge near you. HDTV? That’s so the noughties!
