Logitech QuickCam Sphere AF review

August 6, 2009 by Insider Staff

Logitech QuickCam Sphere AFLooking like a cross between the talking pipe from Teletubbies and HAL 9000 from 2001: A Space Odyssey, the Logitech QuickCam Sphere AF is a hilarious but powerful webcam. Read on to find out if that’s a trade off you’re willing to make…

Pros
The Logitech QuickCam Sphere AF has the usual “Look, you can be a cartoon shark” features bundled in the software, but it’s the face tracking ability of the Carl Zeiss, HD shooting camera that stands out. It can tell where you are and within the sphere shell can move horizontally and vertically to focus on your mug. And if you’ve got a fast broadband connection, it’ll work with Skype’s High Quality Video service.

Cons
The USB stalk is a bit overkill isn’t it? It looks like a plant your mum might accidentally end up watering. Of course, you can always detach it, but neither solution is ideal if you plan to use the Logitech QuickCam Sphere AF with a laptop rather than a PC at a desk.

In summary then…
Weigh everything up very carefully before emptying your wallet on the Logitech QuickCam Sphere AF. Yes, video quality is astounding, but do you need a camera that tracks you around the room? If you like to put on shows for audiences – we won’t ask what – you’ll want this, but otherwise think long and hard before coughing up.
