Microsoft LifeCam Show review
September 17, 2009 by Insider Staff
We know what you’re thinking. Are you sure this is actually a webcam? You’d better believe it. Despite being just over 6cm in length, the Microsoft LifeCam Show is a nifty little webcam that’ll go toe to toe with video streamers three times the size of it.
Pros
The small size, constructible stand, clever carry case and clip make the Microsoft LifeCam Show perfect for laptops. The 800×600 video quality is a great improvement on previous LifeCam models, and is smooth for the most part, plus a button on the side of the camera will bring up your Windows Live contacts instantly to make a call.
Cons
Microsoft has made it quite clear that the LifeCam Show is for laptops only by supplying the shortest USB cable possible with it. If you want to use this with a desktop, you’ll need to either have your beige box right next to the monitor, or put your monitor on the floor and work and chat on the carpet. Oh, and because it’s Microsoft, it doesn’t work with Macs, natch. Can’t we all just get along?
In summary then…
Don’t be fooled by the 2.0 megapixel sensor claim on the Microsoft LifeCam Show – that’s stills only. Video is decent though, and if you travel a lot and need to keep in touch with home, the Microsoft LifeCam Show is a perfect purchase. If you’re more likely to natter from the comfort of your fave chair though, this isn’t worth the extra expense.
