How to squeeze more high-quality movies onto your PSP
April 7, 2008 by Insider Staff
Your PSP can play back full-screen feature films with the minimum fuss, but packing its memory with movies takes a little skill and smart preparation.
Learn how to squeeze the most from Sony’s portable multimedia hero here…
Step 1: DIY ripping
Transferring a movie from DVD to a digital file is known as ripping it. There’re plenty of free software packages around that’ll do it, but Handbrake is one of the most trusted and reliable. Plus, it’s free and available for PC and Mac. It transfers movies to your computer, as well as compressing them cleverly, so you’ll squeeze more movies into less memory.
Download it, and install it to your PC or Mac. Then fire it up and shove in a DVD. Handbrake will automatically scan the disk to identify the main film (it’ll automatically leave out any DVD extras too). Next choose somewhere to save the converted file, and give it a name in the “Destination” box. Lastly, choose PSP from the “Presets” panel, and hit the “start” button.
Step 2: Load up on movies
Transferring movie files to the PSP is dead easy. Hook it up to your PC or Mac using a USB cable. Then browse its memory stick as you would any other drive. Copy across your movie files, and disconnect it, then simply view them from the Videos menu on the PSP’s screen.
Step 3: Memory matters
The PSP can accept memory sticks up to 4GB in size, so don’t waste money buying larger capacities if you’re planning to use them in Sony’s console. Instead buy more than one, load them all up with films and carry your own multiplex in your pocket.
Must have accessories
Monster battery – Watching videos will drain your PSP’s battery in a couple of hours. Carry a spare and you’ll be able to keep watching for much longer.
Headphones – The PSP’s included headphones are good enough for a quick spot of gaming or listening to the odd MP3, but you wouldn’t want to endure them for the length of a movie. Instead, get some comfy cans that sit over your ears. They’ll block out more noise, and let you enjoy your movie’s soundtrack in increased clarity.
More memory – The more memory you have, the more movies you can carry. It’s as simple as that!
