Sony RHT-G series slips surround sound into TV stand

March 19, 2009 by Insider Staff

Sony RHT=G550Sony has announced details of the new RHT-G series surround speakers, with a bit of a twist. Unlike other surround sound speaker sets, these are cleverly hidden inside a TV stand.

It’s an idea that should to anyone who doesn’t want to turn their living room into a potential trip hazard with reams of speaker cable, but Sony also says there’s more than feng shui going on inside the RHT-G series. The angle and physical orientation of the speakers have been precisely calculated to provide the perfect surround sound environment, without having a set of speakers behind you.

Three models are available to suit various TV sizes. At the top of the range is the RHT-G1550, designed for TVs of 46 to 55-inches in size. It packs a massive 550W, 5.1 channel speaker array inside.

Next up is the RHT-G950, designed for 40 to 46-inch displays, which lowers the power to 470W. At the lower end, there’s the RHT-G550 which sports a 330W, 3.1 channel system and is optimised for 32 to 40-inch tellies.

All three Sony RHT-G models provide S-Master digital amplification and signal processing for rich, accurate and detailed sound reproduction, plus a vibration-damped sub-woofer. Connectivity includes three HDMI ports and single Digital Media Port for external audio devices.

Sony’s RHT-G series surround sound TV stands are coming this summer; prices haven’t been confirmed yet.
