Samsung YP-Q2: better than the iPod nano?

March 12, 2009 by Insider Staff

Samsung YP-Q2Samsung has unveiled its latest portable music player. Dubbed the YP-Q2, it looks like it could be a very credible alternative to the all-conquering iPod nano.

Why? Well, the main advantage is battery life, which runs to 50 hours in audio only mode. 50 hours! That’s more than double the iPod nano’s 24-hour limit.

In addition to that, the YP-Q2 supports FLAC, an ultra-high quality lossless file format very popular with golden-eared audiophile types. The iPod nano can play Apple’s own lossless format, but that’s nowhere near as prevalent.

Otherwise the Q2 seems much the same as the Q1, its predecessor. The body is the same shape, the same 2.4-inch screen and touch-sensitive controls are used, and it’ll be available in the same 8GB and 16GB versions. It should also play BBC iPlayer files.

Pricing and availability is yet to be confirmed.
