Nintendo Wii looks set for UK price rise

March 12, 2009 by Insider Staff

Nintendo WiiWhile its console rivals Microsoft and Sony have made price cuts in order to make their machines more desirable to the gaming public, Nintendo has never had to reduce the price of the Wii to get sales. Since launching in late 2006, the motion-sensing marvel has remained at £179.99 – and sold like hotcakes.

But now the ailing value of the pound has forced Nintendo to add around £20 to the trade price of the console – that’s the price at which UK retailers buy it. If the retailers choose to keep their profit margins (and in the current economic climate that seems likely), that’ll push the Wii price up to around the £200 mark.

Would that affect Wii’s massive sales? Quite possibly – especially if you consider it’ll widen the gulf between it and the Xbox 360 Arcade to a not inconsiderable £70. But, price rise or no, it’s hard to see Nintendo losing too much of its huge market share.
