Toshiba Qosmio X300-148 review

May 18, 2009 by Insider Staff

Toshiba Qosmio X300-148Toshiba’s 17 inch gaming laptop doesn’t care much for syntax and spelling (O after Q?) but then it doesn’t need to. It’s one brute of a gaming laptop that sits firmly astride the mid level market like a giant red gaming laptop. Which is, er, what it is – find out how that works out inside…

Pros
The Toshiba 17 inch laptop certainly isn’t tosh. The Intel Core 2 Duo processor zips along at speed, almost managing to make Windows Vista not seem bloated and sloth like, which is quite a feat. Games look great and while you won’t be able to crank the newest all the way to the max, you’ll get close. That’s in part down to the respectable NVIDIA 9700M GTS graphics card and healthy 4GB of RAM.

Cons
Not only does the Qosmio X300-148 lacks the more than super hi-res screen and multimedia capabilities of the Asus G71V, it manages to looks as ghastly too. Why do companies think gamers enjoy “extreme” colours like red? We’d like to have seen a bit more storage space in there too: 320GB won’t get you that far once you discover how to rip DVDs, and hard disks don’t exactly cost much these days.

In summary then…
A first glance compared with the Asus tested would have you writing the Qosmio off. But since it clocks in at £300 under the G71V, if you’re cash strapped and don’t need Blu-ray, you’d be better off. We’d like to have seen a higher resolution screen on board, as stretched over 17 inches, 1,4440×900 isn’t so sharp. Ultimately though, that’s the trade off – you get a HDMI port to solve that, and save money too. This is exactly what you’d expect from a mid-range gaming notebook: it does a decent job of handling all new games, but not spectacular. All you need to decide is whether you can afford that difference or not right now.
