Asus G71V-7T043G review

May 28, 2009 by Insider Staff

Asus G71V-7T043GAsus doesn’t just make Eee PC netbooks – take the Asus G71V-7T043G . Doesn’t quite roll off the tongue the same way, but it packs a massive amount of tech underneath the Ferrari like bonnet. Just trust us that the latter isn’t a complement.

Pros
The G71V packs an Intel Core 2 Extreme processor, the world’s first four-core CPU as well as NVIDIA’s 9700M GT graphics card, so it chomps through visuals like a midwestern American at an eating contest. A whole terabyte of storage meanwhile, enough for more than 1,000 movies, a Blu-ray drive and HDMI port make it just as much a multimedia monster – you can even lash it up to view HD movies on the big screen.

Cons
Whoa. When it comes to looks, the Asus G71V is like the guy who gets his Peugeot 206 lowered and exhaust pipe widened – unnecessary attempts at style that fail catastrophically. And there’s so many glowing edges and blinking bits round the screen it’s hard to keep your eye on the game at hand. We’d blame Asus for the awful red paint job and honeycomb texture wristrest, but it might be what passes for cool in Taiwan.

In summary then…
The Asus G71V doesn’t pack the absolute best graphics card on the market, but it comes close. Where it really shines is as an all rounder – the quad core chip means this is perfect if you’ve got a hardcore gamer in the house, but others need to use it on occasion for work, internet browsing and especially multimedia. It’s just a pity it looks so embarrassing. Asus has got the tech down to a tee, but it needs to go back to design school. Anyone got Apple’s number?
