LG may ditch plasma TVs in favour of LCD

February 27, 2009 by Insider Staff

LG plasma TVPioneer is already pulling out of the plasma-making business, and now it seems Korean giant LG could be taking similar action.

The firm’s vice-president Lee Gyu-Hong recently said that unless the global economy starts to pick up soon, LG may be forced to stop pricey plasma production to concentrate on building LCD televisions, which are becoming increasingly cheap to produce in large, plasma-rivalling sizes.

If LG did that it would leave Samsung and Panasonic as the only major plasma TV producers in the world, and suggest that the technology – which delivers fantastic picture quality with deep blacks and beautiful colours – could well be on its last legs. And that would be a darn shame.
