Panasonic unveils inch-thick Z1 plasma screen

February 25, 2009 by Insider Staff

Panasonic Viera Z1It seems thinness is the next buzzword in hi-def TV design. Sony, Samsung and Philips have all launched skinny tellies in recent months and now it’s the turn of Panasonic with its Neo PDP range of plasmas.

They boast 2,000,000:1 contrast ratios, 600Hz refresh rates for silky smooth motion and are around 50 percent brighter than Panasonic’s current range – and all while using only half the power of regular plasma TVs. Black levels have also been boosted thanks to Panasonic’s reducing of the residual light in each of the screen’s cells.

All but the entry-level G10 models come with networking abilities too, allowing you to stream media files from PCs and networked hard drives, plus access online content (including YouTube videos) through Panasonic’s Viera Cast on-demand service.

V10 models are THX-certified for cinema quality pictures and “Lucasfilm-approved colour matching”, but it’s the range-topping Z1 model that takes things to the next level. This screen is only an inch thick and comes with the ability to accept full HD pictures wirelessly from a separate box.

And if you think that’s impressive, Panasonic says the next year will see the launch of an 8.8mm thick TV with an OLED-rivalling contrast ratio of “Infinity:1″! Blimey!
