LG Solar phone means dead batteries are dead
February 23, 2009 by Insider Staff
Don’t you just hate it when your battery dies on you? The LG Solar Phone solves that problem, taking a renewable energy source and squeezing it inside a mobile phone you’d actually consider carrying around. That’s no mean feat!
The LG Solar phone is LG’s last surprise from Mobile World Congress, and while it doesn’t have a glass keypad, or a projector built in, like the Samsung Blue Earth phone on show, it does have one very special talent: it’s solar powered.
The LG Solar Phone will still charge like your regular mains leccy leeching mobiles, but a large solar panel across the battery cover gives you the option to charge through the sun’s rays instead: ten minutes soaking in the light will give you 3 minutes of talk time, and if it’s a spotless day, you should be able to charge it all the way to the max – if your desk has a window view.
It’s only a concept at the moment, but LG says the Solar Phone could make it to Europe by late 2009 – which by our calculation gives global warming enough time to make it useable over here. As always, we’ll keep you posted!
