Sony NAS-SC55PKE review

July 13, 2009 by Insider Staff

Sony NAS-SC55PKEPC a no-no? The Sony NAS-SC55PKE is a self-contained, 80GB music streamer, with one main unit and one spare for a second room. You can even add up to three more units for around £200 each and turn your whole house into one thumping music box! So, is it a dream streamer or all washed up? We take a look

Pros
Don’t have a PC, but still want to stream tunes your house? No need to fret, Chet, you can plump for this multi-room streamer system, consisting of a main unit with 80GB of hard disk space (to store your collection) and an additional self-contained player that links up wirelessly. Sound quality is superb, and there are tasty bonuses in the form of a DAB tuner, built-in iPod dock and smartypants playlist generator – xDJ. Just select a few tracks and it’ll cobble together a roster of similar tunes to maintain the party mood through till morning!

Cons
Setting the system up is a herculean task requiring far more cables and fiddling than seems necessary. The player’s Wi-Fi adapter, for instance, comes in a separate box that needs its own power supply – why not just integrate it into the player, Sony? Plus the menu system’s a labarynthine cafuddle. Also, the price is also scarily high.

In summary then…
Setting aside the cost and set-up quibbles, this is a decent alternative to using a computer as the storage medium in your wireless music system. 80GB can hold a heck of a lot of Lionel Ritchie albums (either ripped from CDs or transferred over from a computer or storage device). That said you’d be forgiven for expecting a larger drive for the price! Sound quality, however, in both the hub and secondary player is more glorious than that voice of a questionable angel, Chrlotte Church. You can also add more secondary players to create a full-on multi-room system in your home.
