Apple cracks open Time Capsule

March 26, 2008 by Insider Staff

Apple Time Capsule 500GBApple has upped the ante on the hard drive style scene, with the release of its achingly sleek wireless Time Capsule.

Enabling you to effortlessly back-up your machine’s contents, this 500GB digital dumping ground has got to be one of the hottest add-ons for Mac.

The lowdown
Backing up your computer’s contents can be a right pain, but not with Apple’s new Time Capsule. This compact device automatically backs up all the data from your Mac, doing so at regular intervals – so once you’ve set it up you never need to think about it again. It will only work with Macs running the latest OS X Leopard operating system, mind you – so check you’ve got that before buying.

Top talents
Wireless – The Apple Time Capsule talks to your Mac wirelessly, so there’s no need to plug in any cables. You can even have it sitting in another room backing up your most precious memories.

Automatic – Once you’ve set your backup schedule the Time Capsule does the rest, automatically sucking up data every hour, day or week without needing to be prompted.

Works with multiple Macs – Got more than one Mac at home? Not a problem: the Time Capsule will work with all of them simultaneously.

Apple Time Capsule £190.07 on 26 March 2008.

Closest rivals
Western Digital MyBook Home Edition – Another external hard drive with automatic backup, the MyBook works with both PCs and Macs, but needs to be hooked up via a cable – there’s no Wi-Fi here.

Maxtor OneTouch 4 Plus – As well as offering backup via USB or FireWire (again, no Wi-Fi), the OneTouch 4 Plus has a feature that creates a “snapshot” of your PC’s hard drive that can be quickly booted if you suffer a system crash or virus attack.

Western Digital Elements 500GB – If you’re simply after more external storage, and aren’t too fussed about automatic or one-touch backup, this affordable, tough-shelled drive is a fine choice.
