Sony Bravia WE5: the green screen
February 16, 2009 by Insider Staff
Thank the gods for the Sony Bravia WE5. Well, aside from providing us with the first bit of gadget news today that isn’t mobile phone-related (can you tell we’ve been at World Mobile Congress today?), the Sony Bravia WE5 is a snazzy television and an eco-ninja, protecting Mother Earth whilst providing us with our favourite TV shows!
A full-HD television, the Sony Bravia WE5 has a variety of functions designed to save power (and in the process the planet). First up is the Hit Cathode Fluorescent Lamp backlight. That, dear reader, is the key behind this telly using 50 per cent less power than rivals of equivalent size. And while we’re on the issue of size, this is available in 40 and 46-inch models.
Back to protecting the Earth, and the Sony Bravia WE5 is equipped with heat and motion sensors. Why would it need those, exactly? Well to detect if you’re actually in the room. You see, if you leave the room the WE5 will switch to a “picture off” mode, leaving the sound on. If you don’t come back it’ll turn off altogether. Not standby. We’re talking completely off, here. Now that’s clever. There’s also 100Hz tech to keep images crispy.
So, when can we expect this Stephen Hawking-intelligent TV? Our sources suggest the summer, but there’s no price as of yet. But you can be sure Sony will charge the Earth… straight after we’ve saved it.
