Philips NP1100 review

July 28, 2009 by Insider Staff

Philips NP1100Big house? Loads of music? You, my friend, need a music streamer to pipe all your digital tunes from one room to the next. The Philips NP1100 is a stylish black little number, with more musical talent than the whole of Girls Aloud. Although that’s not saying much really, so you’d better read on to find out just how talented this is…

Pros
Compact and stylish (a bit like Frankie Dettori), this Wi-Fi equipped shelf-sitter from Philips benefits from a user-friendly set-up process – anyone able to follow a user manual properly should have it corralling digital tunes after about ten minutes. It hooks up to an existing audio system via digital or analogue cables, and solid showings in both sound quality and network reliability make it an impressive performer.

Cons
With no playback controls on the unit itself, you’ll need to keep the remote control handy at all times – lose it and you’ll have no way to stream music or access internet radio stations. Compatibility wise, it’s not bad – MP3, WMA and AAC files are supported – but it can’t play DRM-protected files or any kind of lossless format. What’s with that?

In summary then…
Tidy-looking, small, easy to set up and a dependable performer, the NP1100 is also nicely affordable, making it a top buy for anyone looking to add music streaming and web radio to an existing hi-fi setup. Potential buyers should be aware that it won’t play any lossless or DRM-protected content – but with iTunes now ditching the dreaded DRM that’s perhaps less of an issue than it would’ve been six months ago.
