Eco-friendly gadget round-up
February 13, 2009 by Insider Staff
There’s been a slew of eco-friendly gadgets announced in recent days, which is a good thing considering the crazy-arse weather we’ve been experiencing. The planet needs us, and it’s only right that gadget companies lead the way in the fight to save Mother Earth. Get one of these tree-hugging gadgets and you have our permission to act more smug than Bono in front of your mates. Just don’t blame us if they hit you…

Vexia Econav
A satnav that helps cut your CO2 emissions? Genius! The Econav steps up to the enviro-friendly plate by taking into account your car make and model, the amount of people in the car, the type of petrol you use, and then calculates the optimum route to your destination for minimum CO2 output. Clever doesn’t quite do it justice.

Samsung Blue Earth
Sammy’s new eco-friendly blower is giving some solar panels a hitch-hike on its back, sucking up the sun’s rays to power it. The Samsung Blue Earth is even made from recycled materials. The only thing that can stop it working would be an eclipse or the darned English weather!

Nokia N79 Eco
Nokia announced the N79 Eco last month. Another variant of the N79, this mobile phone gives some much-needed love back to the planet with its smaller packaging and no charger included whatsoever. Oh and £4 of the purchase goes to the WWF. That’s the World Wildlife Fund, nothing to do with wrestlers in spandex.

LG XCanvas LCD
Props to LG for introducing this eco-friendly LCD screen to the televisual game. The XCanvas hugs trees in a metaphorical sense, by introducing a four-step power-saving plan: minimum sleep, intermediate sleep, hibernate, and screen off. Nice.

Amazon Kindle 2
It’s an e-reader, so what does that mean? It means that it can store books without having to chop down trees to create the paper. It can store 1,500 books to be precise, as well as newspapers, magazines and the like. Imagine how many trees would be saved if we all had a Kindle 2. A lot!
