Sony looks at Blu-ray disc hybrids for PS3
February 12, 2009 by Insider Staff

Sony’s director of hardware has promised to release more gaming-movie Blu-ray hybrid discs this year in an attempt to drum up more PlayStation 3 sales. The move comes after a disappointing 2008 for the console in the face of the Nintendo Wii’s success and an aggressive Xbox 360promotional campaign in the run up to Christmas.
John Koller, the director of hardware, had this to say: “We are actively pushing, and the way that we see the future is that the movie and the game are placed on the same disc. There are a lot of developers who say, ‘we have this game based on a movie, wouldn’t it be great to marry these concepts?’ We will definitely see this stuff this year.”
That’s great news for movie and game buffs, and a pretty sensible idea to be honest, considering that a standard Blu-ray game uses arounf 40GB worth of data on a disc, leaving 10GB for the full-length movie. We’re not sure you’d be getting much more bonus material on that though.
Admittedly, game-related movies have often fallen flat on their face (we’re thinking the pants Jean Claude Van Damme Street Fighter and Chritsopher Lambert’s disgraceful Mortal Kombat, Bob Hoskins as Mario – oh, the nightmares), but there are definitely some that work (Resident Evil, perhaps). Then, of course, there are the movies that get turned into games (Iron Man, Superman Returns, Hulk – mainly superhero games.
Kolle also talked about the console’s price: “We are comfortable with the price point we are at today, but we are always looking at the market.” So don’t expect any price drops anytime soon…
