Nu Dolphin 1GB review

February 12, 2009 by Insider Staff

Nu Dolphin 1GBThe Nu Dolphin has a USP (unique selling point) that is undeniably “U”. How much of an “SP” it is depends on how keen a swimmer you are for it is, believe it or not, a totally waterproof MP3 player.

Pros
Filling the compact, robust Dolphin with tracks is very simple – you just drag and drop – and operation is even simpler, with only play, fast forward, rewind and a volume control to trouble you. It works perfectly in a swimming pool, with the player attaching to the band of your goggles and the waterproof ’phones screwing satisfyingly in to the player, then violating your ears to such a depth, you’ll swear you can feel them touching your brain.

Cons
With the waterproof earphones, sound quality is echoey and muffled before you’re even submerged, although for what it’s worth, audio is perfectly passable if you use non-waterproof earphones (via a supplied adaptor). The feature set is so minimal, it makes the iPod Shuffle look like a Star Trek Tricorder. You don’t even get a random play option, so your playlist’s running order will never change, unless you replace the tracks.

In summary then…
This is an easy product to review. If you simply must have music as you glide through the chlorinated water of your local pool, there’s nothing better than the Nu Dolphin. If you’re not a swimmer, or can happily breaststroke without the accompaniment of the Goombay Dance Band, avoid it like you would a verruca.

Sumvision Ice 1000 8GB reviewAn extraordinary feat of cost-cutting, the Ice 1000 MP3 player serves up a 2.8-inch touchscreen, video playback, recorder, FM radio and even some Java games for less than the price of a medium-sized family meal at Nando’s. Pros Well… it’s certainly cheap. Sound quality is pretty good, at least once you’ve added your own earphones. [...]...
