Spec test: Sony VAIO P vs Asus Eee PC Touch T91

February 4, 2009 by Insider Staff

Sony VAIO P vs Asus T91 Tiny netbooks are big business at the moment so, with that in mind, we thought we’d bring you a sort of head to head with two of the most awe-inspiring netbooks coming to the market in the near future: the slinky, dinky Sony VAIO P, and the eminently twistable and touchy Asus Eee PC Touch T91.

How big are you?
Where else to start with a netbook, than size? The Asus Eee PC Touch T91, while dinky enough at 225×163x25.2mm can’t quite match the Sony VAIO P’s dinky proportions. That’s so small we saw Sony CEO Howard Stringer pull one out of his trouser pocket mid-conference at CES! We don’t want to think what else he had down there!
Winner: Sony VAIO P

Capacity, sir?
So, the T91 has a 160GB hard drive, eh? Seen it all before! What’s that? Sony serves up 128GB of SSD in its higher-end VAIO P models. We’ll give this one to the VAIO, thank you very much!
Winner: Sony VAIO P

Hooray for the display!
Ooh, this one’s a toughie! In one corner we have the T91’s 8.9-inch tablet display that demonstrates the gorgeous “Doorways” interface with all the aplomb you’d expect. But put it next to the VAIO P’s gorgeous widescreen eight-inch, 1600×768 display and you can’t help but falling for the P. We’ve not seen a Sony screen yet that lets us down, and this is no different. Another win for the P man.
Winner: Sony VAIO P

Got stamina?
You don’t want your netbook conking out on you in the middle of an important (yawn) spreadsheet, so which of these two has the battery power to last? Well, the VAIO P maxes out at around 3-4 hours, unless you opt to double the cells in the battery, but that’ll set you back some AND increase the size! The T91 might not expand on the battery life of previous Eees, but it still lasts a couple of hours longer than the P’s.
Winner: Asus Eee PC Touch T91

I’ve got the power
Both models are sporting an Intel Atom chip that’s been designed specifically for netbooks. Nothing to choose between them!

What’s extra, hmm?
The VAIO P doesn’t have that many extras, 3G is pretty standard now, but this netbook’s big trick is it’s petite form. But seriously, how can you compete with a machine that allows you twist its display and fold it back upon itself, to make a tablet? You can’t. Meaning the Asus wins.

And the price?
Well, we know the VAIO P isn’t going to be as small as its dimensions. Starting figures will be from £850, with higher-end models hit the post-grand mark – that’s a lot for a netbook! Unfortunately Asus still hasn’t offered us a price yet. So, in the name of fairness, we’re going to call this one a draw.
