Tangent Cinque DAB radio review

September 29, 2009 by Insider Staff

Tangent_5Tangent has produced some of our favourite looking DAB radios in the past (we’re thinking the Tangent Quattro), and now there’s another one to delight our optical taste buds. The Tangent Cinque can play DAB radio broadcasts, MP3s, WMA files and CDs, but what it all comes down to are the sonics. So, are they any good? Find out after the jump…

Pros
The Cinque is compact enough to be used as a bedside clock radio, but manages to team up its DAB and FM tuners with a CD player. And not just any CD player – it’s geared up to play MP3 and WMA digital files from a CD-R too. The walnut finish gives it a nice bit of Austin Powers-esque retro chic to boot.

Cons
The price is fairly steep, especially considering that the radio has only one speaker. This means you don’t get the kind of clearly separated two-channel stereo performance delivered by, say, the Vita Audio R2.

In summary then…
Despite the lack of sharply defined stereo, the Tangent Cinque does deliver ear-pleasingly tasty sound quality, whether you’re listening to the weather report on DAB or The Very Best of Des O’Connor on the CD player (yes, even then). It looks the part too with its delicious walnutty flavour – but all this comes in return for a fairly hefty wedge of cash. If you can afford it, then this is a very pleasing option.
