Nokia 5800 XpressMusic review
August 13, 2009 by Insider Staff
While we’re patiently waiting for the arrival of Nokia’s super-phone, the N97, we’ll have to make do with the company’s first foray into the world of touchscreen mobile phones – the 5800 XpressMusic. It’s a pretty snazzy offering from the Finnish phone maestros, but can it match up to more celebrated touchy handsets? Hmm?
Pros
As used by Batman, the handset formerly known as The Tube is another touchscreen cam/vid/musi-phone-o-nav. It doesn’t let you track the movements of everybody in Gotham City, but it does do some clever Web 2.0 stuff, giving you icons for your best chums on the homepage that link to records of your conversations, text and email exchanges as well as updates to their Facebook accounts. The 3.2-meg camera and media player are as polished as you’d expect from Nokia.
Cons
Although nicely made, this doesn’t feel as “premium” as an N Series phone and the GPS is as bad as you’d expect from Nokia. However, the main failing here is the lack of Comes With Music, as found on the 5310. That’s like building a robot to take over the world, but failing to equip it with your new death-ray. The iPhone is a fine music device, but even it would crumble in the face of a clean-sounding device with over-the-airwaves access to music that you don’t have to pay for.
In summary then…
Nokia’s first stab at a touchscreen phone is better than any of us dared to hope. Does it beat the iPhone? Well… no. The lack of menu customizability and features such as multi-touch leave it trailing Apple’s behemoth. However, bolt on Comes With Music, and you have a mouth-watering proposition. So how about it, Nokia…?
