LG Renoir review

September 4, 2009 by Insider Staff

LG Renoir LG has produced some stunning products to look at in recent times, from its kitchen appliances to its television range. Even its phone range has been pretty stunning to look at, if not all that in use. The LG Renoir is served up with the usual tantalising looks, including a sumptuous touchscreen. But can it live up to its billing?

Pros
One of the most recent “iPhone beaters” – boy, has that phone had a lot of beating since its launch – the Renoir boasts an eight-meg camera with face recognition and xenon flash, eight gigs of onboard storage AND a microSD card slot. Stick that in your smug-pipe and smoke it, Apple. The camera, media player and GPS are all pretty good in their own rights, and the screen is excellent. Icing on top is provided by Dolby sound processing (not as impressive as it, er, sounds) and DivX video support – now that actually is useful.

Cons
The Renoir is a very good all-rounder but it feels a bit cheap and doesn’t have any one outstanding feature. The camera can match the Sony Ericsson C905 and Samsung M8800 Pixon for megapixels but not for the quality of results, the touchscreen-based OS and music player are fiddly and annoying compared to the iPhone, while video playback, despite better format support, suffers in comparison to the iPhone or BlackBerry Bold for what optical technicians call “niceness”. Battery life is also poor, but then it always is on these do-it-all phones. You’d get more juice out of a handful of dust.

In summary then…
If you want something that matches the overall joyous experience of iPhone ownership, but you are ideologically opposed to buying Apple products, this should be your second choice after Samsung’s Pixon. If it’s a really good cam-phone you’re after, Sony Ericsson’s C905 is probably a better bet. Oh, and if you’re not an even-tempered chap/ess, the touchscreen menus may sandpaper your patience to a fine grain. Umm… that all sounds really negative, doesn’t it? This is actually a decent phone, but it could and should have been an even better one.
