JVC NX-BD3
January 14, 2009 by Insider Staff
This entry-level Blu-ray offering from JVC looks the business, but forgoes full-on 5.1 surround sound for a mere 2.1 pseudo-surround virtual effect. So, should the management of the IMAX start worrying about diminished ticket sales because of the JVC NX-BD3? Read on to find out…
Pros
Seductive systems are JVC’s speciality and this tactile temptress is no different. In addition to its stunning garb, it throws out pin-sharp picture quality and solid audio performance. The JVC also features an Ethernet port and DLNA capabilities, which allow it to act as a digital media streamer, pulling video, music and photo files off your home computer and bringing them into the living room.
Cons
The speaker setup here consists of only two satellites and a subwoofer, and while they do make an admirable stab at producing virtual surround sound you don’t get the all-encompassing audio offered by the Pioneer and Samsung systems. Also, the remote control buttons are disappointingly dinky for our rather portly digits.
Verdict
Combining compact dimensions with solid build quality and a desirable design, this entry-level system delivers a fine Blu-ray experience without really making the most of the format’s sonic capabilities. So it’s not exactly a home cinema experience to spill your popcorn over, but that said, many users will find the addition of media streaming to be a handy added bonus, as it means you can listen to MP3 music and view DivX movies from the comfort of your sofa. And relax…
