Palm Pre the ‘real’ iPhone killer?
January 9, 2009 by Insider Staff
Okay, we’ll admit, we’ve bandied around the phrase “iPhone killer” a bit to freely in recent months, but that’s more out of hope than anything. Not because we dislike the iPhone, quite the opposite. We want other manufacturers to raise their game and push each other to the limits. And that seems to be the case with the Palm Pre smartphone – a (and we say this carefully) potential iPhone assassin.
Palm has been languishing in the shadows for a while now, but the Pre looks like a spectacular return to form. It looks like the resultant lovechild of a sordid affair between an iPhone and a BlackBerry, which can’t be a bad thing.
First thing that you notice is the 3.1-inch touchscreen. But then, when you get to grips with it, you realise that it’s also got a slide-out QWERTY keypad. It’s packed with the same sensors as the iPhone, so you can tilt it horizontally and the screen rotates, and it has multi-touch controls as well. It’s als opacking 3G, GPS and 8Gb of Flash memory. It’s also toting Palm’s new OS – WebOS. And we can tell you now, it looks pretty sexy and simple to use.
It looks like it’s going to hit our mighty shores this summer, by which time Apple will have braced itself for a slap around the fascia from Palm.
