Top 50 Digital TV boxes dissected
March 18, 2008 by Insider Staff
Back in the day you never got to watch the telly you really wanted to, simply because nobody could work out how to set the video.
Thankfully today things are different. Not only do we get treated to a ton of telly treats on Freeview, but we can pause, rewind and record at the touch of a button. Here’s our pick of the top Digital TV boxes.
Top of the tree
Humax PVR9200TB DVB-T 160GB
Best price: £159.79 on 18 March 2008
The bargain basement price is one of the key reasons for the Humax PVR9200TB securing pole position, but it’s far from shabby on the feature front. At the core of this PVR is a built-in Freeview digital box with a beast of 160GB hard disk in tow, so you can record around 100 hours of telly. Its twin tuners mean you can simultaneously record and watch, plus you can pause live TV to make that impromptu cuppa.

TVonics DVR-FP150 DTR DVB-T Twin Tuner 160GB
Best price: £175.94 on 18 March 2008
Not a household name (yet!) but it’s worth keeping your eye on TVonics, not least because it adds dash of style to the typically straight-laced PVR world. The glossy aluminium-clad TVonics DVR-FP150 is the size of a shoebox but is stuffed with a 160GB HDD, capable storing 80 hours of TV programmes, a twin tuner, Freeview and an eight-day Electronic Programming Guide (EPG).

Unsung hero
Hitachi HDR080-DTR DVB-T Twin Tuner 80GB HDD
Best price: £99.99 on 18 March 2008
If you’re on a tight budget but still want a serious dollop of recording storage then the slimline Hitachi HDR080-DTR is worth a shufti. Its 80GB HDD will store a fair few hours of Corrie while its twin tuners integrates Freeview digital TV and the ability to watch and record at the same time. A seven-day EPG adds to its solid feature set.
