Toshiba 40ZF355D

January 7, 2009 by Insider Staff

Toshiba 40ZF355D Toshiba has been knocking out decent televisions for a while now. Its latest 40-inch LCD offering looks to take on the bigger brands with a colour explosion! But is this taste of the rainbow just the tip of the iceberg r is it hiding a multitude of sins? We get up close and personal with the Toshiba 40ZF355D to find out.

Pros
The Toshiba excels where colour is concerned, busting out unfeasibly bright greens, yellows and oranges that’ll have you reaching for your shades – particularly if perma-tanned presenter Dale Winton is on. It’s also one of the smaller 40-inch models around, boasting a 23mm-thin frame – that means you can squeeze it into the sort of nook you’d normally expect to accommodate only a 32 or 37-inch model.

Cons
Picture quality can’t match the best out there, thanks to a bit of motion blur during fast-paced movement and rather poor black reproduction. The latter means that black objects and areas on screen look overly bright, especially when you’re watching in a dimly lit or dark room, and this lack of contrast gives the picture a slightly flat look. It’s “only” got three HDMI ports as well. Ok, that’s not exactly a con, but when other models are busting out four, then we get greedy!

Verdict
The Toshiba 40ZF355D’s dinky dimensions give it a compelling, if not exactly unique, selling point, but aside from that there’s little to recommend it over say the Samsung LE40A856 or Philips 42PFL9803H. Picture and sound quality are solid but unspectacular, connectivity is average and build quality is a tad plasticky compared to other models. In other words, it’s never going to take centre-stage in a Mr TV competition, but it won’t finish last either…
