Samsung LE40A856
August 28, 2009 by Insider Staff
This 40-inch television from Samsung comes with all the bells and whistles: it has a 1920×1080 resolution, weighs 15.9kg and measures 986.7 x 618 x 44.4mm. But is it up to the task of more celebrated LCD manufacturers, such as Philips and Pioneer? We find out…
Pros
Slimline, glossy and gorgeous – no we’re not talking about us – this high-end 40-inch LCD is probably the best-looking television Samsung has ever produced. But it’s not just a pretty face. Oh no, it’s packed to the gills with top-grade tech (including four HDMI ports), which allows it to deliver a winning combo of blazing colours, silky smooth motion and pin-sharp detail. Just hook up any HD material and watch it come to life.
Cons
To be honest there’s very little about this TV that we didn’t like. The black levels are quite as black as your black heart and contrast aren’t up to the standards of most plasma screens, it’s true, but that’s hardly a deal-breaker and it’s an LCD-wide issue rather than one specific to this particular set.
Verdict
Fantastic looks, a skinny frame that’s about as thick as celery, a huge range of connections (did we mention those four HDMI ports?) and most importantly superb picture quality – this really has all the ingredients required to make a fantastic television. It even has an Ethernet port, allowing you to hook it up to your home network in order to stream media files from your computer and download RSS feeds from the Internet. Shop around and you can snap it up at a great price too, making it an all-round champion gogglebox.
