Top 50 Desktop Computers dissected
March 17, 2008 by Insider Staff
When it comes to buying a new desktop you really only have two choices – Mac, or PC. Today, more than ever, Apple desktops not only look stunning, but now they run Windows too.
If you’re after something that offers a bit more value for money however, we’ve selected our choice cuts from the Top 50.
Top of the tree
HP Pavilion a6305 (monitor not included)
Best price: £299 on 17 March 2008
This new desktop tower has stormed straight in at number one and looking at its features for the price, it’s little surprise why. Pre-loaded with Windows Vista Home Premium the HP Pavilion a6305 offers an arsenal of reasons to buy – the combination of the AMD Athlon64 X2 5000+ 2.6GHz processor and 2048MB of memory means software and apps fire-up and run super smoothly, while the jumbo 360GB hard drive can handle mountains of multimedia content.

Rising star
Acer Veriton L410 (monitor not included)
Best price: £188 on 17 March 2008
Loitering just outside the top 20 is this cracking little silver desktop tower for the budget conscious. Of course, you don’t get a monitor with the Acer Veriton L410 set-up. Still, breaking the sub £200 barrier doesn’t stop it offering a solid spread of features, including a brisk AMD Sempron 3800+ 2.2GHz processor and healthy 1024MB dose of memory, with a generous 160GB for storage.
Up against: Packard Bell 2380
Unsung hero
Lenovo ThinkCentre A55 (monitor not included)
Best price: £239.52 on 17 March 2008
Lenovo mightn’t boast the superstar status of brands such as Sony or Apple, yet this outfit peddles some seriously smart desktop towers. The ThinkCentre A55 sits around the number 37 mark, sports a slick Intel Core 2 Duo 2.2GHz processor, a robust 1024MB of memory and a large 160GB helping of memory. Not bad for just over £230 notes.

Loved by experts
Apple iMac 24”
Best price: £1069 on 17 March 2008
Adored by the experts, it’s incredibly hard not to fall for the Apple iMac’s supremely sleek design, despite the hefty price tag. With its expansive 24-inch screen, this new iMac model is a perfect platform for home-video editing and DVD viewing. The Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz processor, 1024MB memory and 320GB hard drive just add to the lust factor.
