New Year’s Resolutions: top tellies
December 31, 2008 by Insider Staff

If there’s one New Year’s resolution you need it’s one of these televisions. We pick three of the very best Full-HD tellies for under a grand, to watch all your favourite shizzle in two-double zero nine…
Samsung LE46A656
Is 46 inches big enough for you sir? Because that’s how big this Full HDTV from Samsung is, and it still costs less than a grand. With a deep red surround, it’s also as sexy as it is big. Throw in an excellent contrast ratio of 50,000:1 and you get blacks as dark as coal and whites that are as white as snow (proper snow – not the grey sludge in London). Four HDMI sockets copes with all your HD needs and a 100Hz setting means the screen refreshes quicker for smoother movement.
Philips 42PFL7603D
Philips TVs have always been impressive, especially those in the Ambilight range. This is one such TV, which emits a glow from LED lights that surround the frame to “enhance your viewing experience.” Like David Beckham this 42-incher looks great, unlike David Bechkam, it doesn’t sound like a castrated Sweep from Sooty and Sweep. Completing the package are four HDMI sockets and an unbelievably user-friendly interface. It’s so easy it makes Russell Brand look positively selective.
Sony Bravia KDL40W4000
This is the mini-est of the three sets here at a comparatively small 40 inches, and only has three HDMI sockets. It doesn’t have a 100Hz setting either, but what it does have is an excellent picture quality, with images that are more smooth than George Clooney on the pull, and sonics that are more booming than a Freesh Prince and Jazzy Jeff room-shaking session. And did we mention that this was the cheapest set here? Well, it is.
