New gear for the new year

December 31, 2008 by Insider Staff

Future NewsWho knows what the future holds? We do. Here are three things that we’re looking forward to in 2009, from 3DTVs and Freeview HD to Sony’s much-touted touchscreen Walkman…

1 Freeview HD
We can’t wait for HD to come to Freeview. Rupert Murdoch’s been hogging all the HD channels for far too long. Well, the wait is almost over and the masses can soon rejoice, because, scheduled for the back end of 2009, the likes of BBC HD, ITV HD and Channel 4 HD will all become available on Freeview. The only bad news is, it’ll be using the DVB-T2 standard, so people with existing set-top boxes will have to pay a smidgeon extra if they want it.

2 3DTVs
What’s the best way to watch telly? You want to be completely immersed, right? Well 3DTVs look like they’re going to be the next step in the evolution of the gogglebox, with LG leading the way. With plans afoot to release a 3DTV set by the end of next year, and more to follow in 2010 and 2011, prepare to get Sir Alan Sugar’s pointy finger coming out of your set as he shouts “You’re fired” at some pathetic Sugar wannabe. Scared? You will be!

3 Sony Touchscreen Walkman
The Sony Walkman’s coming back to try and wrestle its music crown from the iPod. The big S is set to announce an MP3 player at CES, that will have a three-inch OLED touchscreen, Wi-Fi, and a full web browser. Also, Sony’s apparently kitting it out with a beefy S-Master digital amplifier and noise-cancelling technology. What will Apple have in reply? We’ll have to wait and see…
