Apple Cinema Display unboxed

December 17, 2008 by Insider Staff

Apple Cinema DisplayWe were so speechless at the new MacBooks at Apple’s launch back in October that it’s easy to forget the new laptops weren’t the only thing unveiled. Steve Jobs also unleashed a brand new LED monitor, the Apple Cinema Display, on the world, and we’ve just got hold of the 24-inch version to get a hands on – after ripping it out of its box of course, and you can see all the pictures for yourself after the jump.

The only thing more beautiful than the metal frame and shiny bezel is the screen itself, packing a bigger than 1080p 1920×1200 resolution. So long as you’ve got a MacBook that will work with it, it’s beyond simple to set up and will give you far mare screen acreage to play with Photoshop on, or lash up as a media centre thanks to a near 180 degree view. There’s no HDMI ports unfortunately, but take a look at the unboxing gallery below and you’ll see that it’s still a fantastic trade off.

Apple Cinema DisplayAs clean and simple as this box looks, it will unfortunately set you back £650 – it’s money well spent though.

Apple Cinema DisplayOpening it up, there’s just the monitor, a plug, a small instruction book and cleaning cloth, no clutter at all.

Apple Cinema DisplayThere’s speakers built into the aluminium frame, as well as three USB ports on the back for keyboards and other peripherals.

Apple Cinema DisplayIt’s plug and play – although only the new MacBook and MacBook Pros have Mini DisplayPort onboard. For any other Mac, you’ll need to buy a DVI-I to Mini DisplayPort converter.

Apple Cinema DisplayPut hi-res photos on or a film with vivid colour and you’ll be blown away by the beauty of the glossy, LED screen.

Top talents

Beyond HD
The Cinema Display’s resolution is beyond even full HD – that’s plenty of pixels for whatever you use a Mac for.

Plug and play
No installation required: so long as you’ve got the right port, this will kick in instantly.

LED screen
LCD panels are sooo last year. LED gives amazing detail and contrast you’ll never have seen before on a computer monitor.

Going up against
Samsung SyncMaster T240A screen resolution that matches the Cinema Display, for half the price.

Viewsonic VX2260wm – A 22-inch, 1080p monitor with a HDMI socket on the back to work as a telly.

HP W1907V – A 19-incher that rocks the slick black bezel of the Cinema Display, but on a budget.
