Fujitsu-Siemens GraphicBooster bolsters up laptop looks
December 15, 2008 by Insider Staff
Laptop computers are fantastic for working on the go or watching a movie on the train, but unless you’re prepared to splash out on a high-end, bulky gaming laptop, you probably won’t be able to play most of this year’s releases on them. Fujitsu-Siemens has a novel solution: it’s selling its swanky Amilo Sa 3650 laptop with its own GraphicBooster box with a top notch 3D card built in to turn the 3650 into an immense gaming rig at home.
The Sa 3650 is a powerful enough machine on its own, with an AMD X2 processor, 4GB of RAM and a 320GB hard disk for plenty of boot space, but it won’t handle Crysis at anything more than about one frame a century. That’s where the GraphicBooster comes in: plug it in and route it through to an external monitor and it’ll power up graphics performance by up to 470 per cent. The box has an epic ATI Radeon HD 3870 card built in to handle voluptuous visuals at speed, with DV-I and HDMI ports to turn the 3650 laptop into a high-def games console on your telly.
Top talents
Dual purpose
Take the 3650 out of the home and it’ll work as a regular laptop with tip top specs, but lash it up to the Booster box at home and it’ll power up into a gaming rig to rival any desktop.
HD heaven
Hook the laptop up to a HD telly via the HDMI socket and you can reap the full benefits and resolution of the GraphicBooster in your living room.
Multiple monitors
The two output sockets on the box will let you run up to three screens simultaneously: perfect for video editing and flight simulators.
Going up against
MacBook Pro – The 15 inch model packs no fewer than two ATI graphics cards.
Acer Aspire 6920 – This Blu-rayer comes with a HDMI socket to play HD movies on your TV.
Mesh M9850 – A desktop PC that’ll play all the latest games without costing the earth.
