Sony Walkman to go touchscreen in under a month

December 15, 2008 by Insider Staff

New Sony Walkman incoming? We’ve seen a couple of MP3 players to threaten the iPod’s crown this week: first the Nano-annihilating iriver E50, then the Cowon S9, but we’ve just got word of the most serious contender yet. Sony, he of Walkman fame, is rumoured to be announcing its first touchscreen media player in January, and it looks set to tackle the iPod Touch head on.

According to website SonyInsider, Sony will unveil a new flagship Walkman model at the Consumer Electronics Show in January, revitalising the brand by ditching the iPod-favoured LCD panel for a gorgeous three inch OLED panel.

That’s video already sorted, but it’ll tote serious audio conjuring powers too, through a powerful S-Master digital amp. It’s expected to take on the Touch with Wi-Fi cooked in for full web browsing in hotspots and the ability to download podcasts and, even flash movies through everyone’s favourite video-sharing website, Youtube.

No word on storage space, though given its reported thin size we’d have to guess it’ll be of the 16 and 32GB Flash memory variety. You’ll hear any more details as soon as we do if Sony does indeed confirm rumours early next year.
