iPod touch capacity boosted

February 19, 2008 by Insider Staff

Apple iPod Touch 32GBApple has just updated the iPod touch, doubling its maximum capacity from a mediocre 16GB to a much more comfortable 32GB, making it a viable option for housing entire music collections.

If storage might have stopped you, erm, touching a touch (sorry) before, it won’t now!

The lowdown
The iPod touch has finally come of age, with Apple announcing it’s increasing the MP3 player’s maximum capacity to 32 gigabytes. The new size means it’ll hold around 7,000 songs, or around 580 albums.

As well as making the touchscreen iPod a proper option for those wanting to carry all their music, the new size means it’s more suited to holding movies too. You’ll get around 26 movies on the new version, finally putting that gorgeous screen to good use.

Top talents
Touchscreen – The screen on the iPod touch isn’t just proddable with one finger, it’ll accept more than one digit at a time, letting you stretch photos and flick through your music at speed.

Internet applications – The iPod touch is one of the few MP3 players to pack a web browser and e-mail applications. Get yourself to a Wi-Fi hotspot and you’ll be able to surf and send messages without the hassle of lugging a laptop!

iTunes store – As well as mooching around online, the iPod touch can buy music on the move too, thanks to the iTunes Wi-Fi store. Perfect for spur of the moment purchases that sync with your computer when you get back home.

Closest rivals
Samsung YM-P1 – This 20GB media player’s not as slick as the iPod touch, and it doesn’t match its newly enlarged capacity either, but there’s an FM radio inside, a nice big four-inch screen, and it’ll record TV shows through its AV input.

Creative Zen 32GB – This multi-talented MP3 player matches the iPod touch for capacity, and boasts an SD card slot for even more. It’ll also play back DivX files, but lacks the iPod’s Wi-Fi and touchscreen.

Archos 605 Wi-Fi 40GB – More capacity than the iPod touch, and with Wi-Fi for web browsing too. All that’s missing is a touch screen… oh – it’s got that as well? Brilliant!
