Cowon S9 kicks Touch in the ‘Pods

As portable media players go, we were pretty impressed by Cowon’s O2 multimedia box. Cowon itself can’t have been satisfied though, because it’s now slipped out another model, the S9, promising to set new standards for sound on MP3 players and kill the iPod Touch at the same time.

The Flash-memory media player’s claim to fame is that it’s been designed and overseen by Cowon’s CEO, Namkyu “Golden Ears” Park, famed for his razor sharp hearing and heavenly hi-fi taste. He’s made some good calls in that case: wireless stereo Bluetooth support and support for lossless FLAC music files will put this at the top of any audio fan’s Christmas wish list.

It’s not just a treat for your ears though: the S9 sports a 3.3-inch AMOLED touchscreen to chuck out vivid video like nobody’s business, while up to 16GB of storage will let you rip plenty of DVD box sets on to it this Crimbo. It’s out now with prices starting at £169 for the 8GB flavour, and an extra £30 to double the capacity to 16. Where the O2 was clearly an iPod Classic contender for mobile movie viewers, that pricing puts the S9 in the same market as the luvverly iPod Touch, but we reckon it can more than handle its own against Apple’s badboy.
