Sony Ericsson to make Android phones?

December 10, 2008 by Insider Staff

Android expansionWe were counting down the release of Google’s mobile phone operating system, Android, for months, and despite the success of the first handset to run it, HTC’s T-Mobile G1, none of the big makers have yet to follow and make the jump to the search giant’s open source software. Until now that is – we’ve just got word that Sony Ericsson is planning an Android powered phone, as well as a few surprise entrants. Find out who they are after the jump.

The Open Handset Alliance is the group of phone makers and software developers backing Android, and it’s got some very special new members. Sony Ericsson has just joined, suggesting that the company’s current reliance on Symbian could soon be coming to an end, though there are no details on what it has planned (Sony Walkman user created apps appeal though).

So far so expected, but two other new arrivals to the alliance are likely to cause excitement. Eee PC maker Asus is onboard, and while we already know that the Taiwanese tech maker is planning its own smartphone, the prospect of an Android Eee mobile makes it even more appealing. Satnaver Garmin, which has been working on its own touchscreen-enabled handset, the nuvifone, is also lining up behind Android. We’ll bring you more news when we hear it.
