Cogs start turning for Gears of War 2

Microsoft has just confirmed what most gaming fans will have already guessed: Gears of War 2 is coming to the Xbox 360.

Bigger, better and “more badass” – Gears of War 2 will make the original look like a peashooter fight.

Better yet, it’s coming before the end of the year, and because it uses a jazzed-up version of the same game engine, creators Epic Games are promising shinier, sharper graphics, destructible environments and huge battles against hundreds of Locust enemies – that sounds way more impressive than the tiddly four or five-man skirmishes of the first Gears.

More baddies to blast – The improved engine behind the game means it can deliver eye-popping stuff like more on-screen foes, scenery that can be destroyed and eardrum-smashing sound effects.

In-depth story – According to makers Epic, Gears of War 1’s plot was merely “a set-up” to make the sequel’s story more engrossing. We’re not talking War And Peace or anything here, but still…

More of the same – Gears of War’s cover-and-fire system gave stale video game combat a much-needed kick up the backside, and it’s coming back big-style in the sequel.
