Sharp unveils super-green Blu-ray player

Sharp BD-HP21H
If Al Gore is getting to your gadget conscience as well as on your nerves, then you might be looking for a Blu-ray player that’s as good on the planet as it is on your eyes. If so, Sharp’s BD-HP21H is what you want. As well as being a budget Blu-ray box, its low power consumption will keep energy costs down while keeping image quality up.

The BD-HP21H will run on just 26W of juice and it only eats up 0.5W in standby. And despite its green credentials, it’ll still render voluptuous visuals at 1080p via the HDMI output. It’ll even juggle old-school formats like DivX and DVD (remember that one?), upscaling the latter all the way to full HD. The only downside is it’s only Profile 1.1, so there’s no BD Live interactivity, but with prices starting from £150, who’s complaining?

Eco-power
Thanks to efficient power consumption you can watch massive quality movies without running up an equivalent leccy bill – and it still boots up in only ten seconds!

Super sound
The BD-HP21H decodes both Dolby True HD and Dolby Digital Plus sound for all-around audio.

Budget box

At just £150, this is one of the cheapest Blu-rayers on the market.

Going up against
Sony PlayStation 3 – The original mass market Blu-ray player – did we mention it also plays HD games too?

Sony BDP-S350 – An extra twenty pounds will get you a multi-region box so you can start importing straight away.

Samsung BD-P1500 – There’s nothing to make this stand out from the crowd, except the low, low price.
