Toshiba Qosmio G50-10H

Toshiba’s Qosmio range has a proven track record both in terms of power and design. The G50-10H is no different. But does the lack of HD drive harm its chances? Read on…

Pros
Packing in a whopping 18.4-inch Super-TFT screen, the G50-10H delivers images sharp enough to slice your eyeballs. Delivered in true 16:9 aspect ratio and with its 1920 x 1080-pixel resolution, HD performance is second to none. It does weigh a hefty 5kg, but this less-than-lightweight powerhouse can easily run on battery power for up to four hours.

Cons
Since HD-DVD was well and truly beaten in the HD war by Blu-ray, it seems Toshiba is still licking its wounds – you won’t find any form of HD drive fitted. Sure, the DVD rewriter supports upscaling but it’s a small consolation when what you really want is a Blu-ray drive.

Overall
The build quality and the design may entice you in, but it’s the little touches that you’ll stay for, such as the Harmon Kardon speakers, separate remote control and built-in hybrid digital TV tuner. If you’re worried about performance, the use of an Intel quad-core CPU and 3GB of RAM should alleviate your fears and with twin 320GB hard drives for storing all your movies and music, set up in a RAID 1 configuration, there is also little fear of losing your data. Simply put, if you ignore the lack of a Blu-ray drive, you won’t find a laptop with such an impressive feature list for the price.
