How to geotag your mobile phone photos with location info

March 16, 2009 by Insider Staff

Nokia n96Taking snaps on your phone is fine, but other than gawping at them on the screen, do you actually do anything with them? Why not geotag them at the same time, so they’re loaded with the place they were taken, then fling them online so your friends can see where you’ve been?

Step 1: Get set with GPS
If your phone has GPS built in, then you’re ready to go. If it doesn’t, you’ll need to upgrade it. But that needn’t mean buying a whole new GPS-equipped phone, you can buy a simple Bluetooth adapter to send GPS signals to your handset wirelessly. Grab one, pair it with your handset, and you’re ready to go.

If you’re considering a new handset, check out the Nokia N96, Sony Ericsson C905 and Samsung i8510. Nokia and Sony Ericsson’s handsets automatically geotag photos as you use them, while Samsung’s handset comes with ShoZu (detailed below) already pre-installed and set up. Both the C905 and the i8510 also have 8 megapixel sensors for truly stunning photos.

Step 2: Install geotagging software
Now you’ve sorted the hardware, it’s a simple case of loading up geotagging software. ShoZu will work with most phones and is completely free! Download it, and fire it up. Head into the ‘options’ menu and click ‘settings’, followed by ‘Share-It’ and then ‘GPS Tagging’. Turn it on and your phone will automatically geotag every photo it takes from now on, as long as it can receive a GPS signal.

If you’re using a Nokia smartphone, check out Nokia Location Tagger. It does the same thing as ShoZu, but is designed specifically for Nokia phones.

Step 3: Share your shots
Tagging photos with locations is pretty pointless unless you’re going to share them around. Luckily, ShoZu’s software also handles uploading to photo-sharing websites, direct from your phone. Just feed it your Flickr account details, and tap ‘upload’ on the ‘options’ menu for each photo you want to share. You can even set all your photos to automatically upload as you take them in the ‘settings’ screen.

Once they’re uploaded, Flickr will recognise the location data with each photo and plot them on a map with no extra effort required!
