Cookers group test

Electrolux EKT6045XFancy improving your skills in the kitchen? There’s no better way of motivating yourself to cook than wheeling out your blackened old oven for recycling and replacing it with an accurate, energy-efficient and feature-packed new cooker.

These latest models are all energy conscious and won’t waste their precious heat through the double-glazed windows and with fan assisted main ovens and responsive hob plates, they make the most of the energy they do use.

This bunch bring smart new features to the kitchen too, like the Cannon’s handy cooking presets that optimize the cooking temperatures for specific food types for you. Some of them, like the touch-control, button-free Electrolux cooker for example, happen to look suitably cutting-edge to ensure your kitchen looks the business as your braising your steaks.

Hotpoint EW74P (white)Best All-rounder
Hotpoint EW74P (white)
It’s no surprise this is one of the most popular cookers out there. The design couldn’t be more neutral, so it’s not going to clash with any kitchen design and Hotpoint has an enviable reputation for reliability. It looks and feels durable and its easy clean ceramic top makes it practical too. There’s little in the way of next-gen technology incorporated, but the programmable timer adds a little flexibility for busy cooks and the safety light will save a lot of potential accidents.

Zanussi ZKC5540WBest Budget machine
Zanussi ZKC5540W
The sculpted panels of the Zanussi look smart with black tinted easy-clean glass. Plus it’s one of the safest models around with its dials up out of reach and no chance of the oven windows getting hot enough to burn. With the timer controlled oven and big upward-facing display it’s one of the simplest cookers to use too.

Cannon C60DPX (stainless steel)Best Features
Cannon C60DPX (stainless steel)
The Professional 600 line is a welcome addition to Cannon’s range, bringing some brushed steel style to the kitchen. The Precision system is the kind of genuinely useful shortcut function that new chefs will appreciate, while the speedy start-up times of the grill and top oven will be loved by anyone with a busy lifestyle.

Stoves 600SIDLm (silver)Best Design
Stoves 600SIDLm (silver)
The Stoves cooker is very well made and stylish too, with its chrome handles and handy hob cover. We’re impressed by the auto switch-off safety feature that’s designed into the drop-down glass lid that provides additional work space. It’s a reasonable price too.

Electrolux EKT6045X (stainless steel)Best Innovation
Electrolux EKT6045X (stainless steel)
The smooth, knobless design makes this cooker look very stylish and of course makes it much easier to keep clean. The touch sensitive controls are a luxury, but they’re great to use, especially when combined with the crisp digital display.
