Apple MacBook

November 13, 2008 by Insider Staff

Apple MacBookApple’s adept at making laptops with all the usability, style and features to make computing enjoyable. But how does the MacBook fare under scrutiny? Read on to find out.

Pros
Apple knows how to make even its most basic machines desirable and one look at the MacBook proves it. This dual-core machine handles as well as it looks with a decent 13.3-inch screen and good-sized keyboard that responds well to the lightest touch. The latest version of the Mac OS is easy to get to grips with and makes setting up the wireless aspects of this notebook simple.

Cons
Battery life used to be a strong point with MacBooks but since moving to Intel CPUs there’s a trade-off in the mobility you can expect. You’ll find this version offers a little over two hours, which isn’t great given its compact and lightweight size.

Overall
The touch and feel of this portable PC is assuredly Apple but being the entry-level model the specification is a little pedestrian and you may find yourself wishing you’d paid out a little more. Sure, it’s a basic machine but it offers everything you’ll need, as Apple pre-load almost all the software you’ll ever need. The Intel Core 2 Duo T8100 is an older generation of chips and the 2GB of RAM and 120GB, while satisfactory, are the minimum we’d accept at this price point. There are no features lacking in this machine, we just wish it had a little more grunt and a longer battery life.
