Dell Studio 17

August 12, 2009 by Insider Staff

Dell Studio 17This offering from long time laptop makers, Dell packs enough features for the family while being serious enough to get down to business. It’s a robust machine with a large screen. But what else does it offer? Read on for our review.

Pros
A desktop replacement in every sense, this is a big notebook weighing 3.8kg that is perfect for a busy family. The 17-inch screen is large and bright and whether it’s webpages or movies, we found images looked sharp. It’s also a powerhouse PC that uses the latest dual-core technology that delivers on both processing and gaming power.

Cons
There is little to complain about with this machine. Minor niggles factor around it not being the best looking of notebooks, as there are large areas of plain grey plastic. The keyboard is large but it’s not the most robust, so not ideal for smaller family members to use.

Overall
Dell has managed to walk a fine line between price and performance with this machine. You can upgrade but at this price you don’t get extras like Blu-ray, just a standard DVD rewriter, but for a family orientated notebook you won’t find any compromises. It manages to pack in the latest Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 3GB of RAM and a whopping 320GB hard drive and still be affordable. There is even a dedicated gaming card, the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650, so you’ll be able to play games with ease. We really like this machine – it’s powerful, portable and for the configuration isn’t about to cost the earth.
