Ask the expert: Point and shoot cameras

November 14, 2008 by Insider Staff

Kodak EasyShare V610Q. I’m a point and shoot kind of ‘photographer’, but want to upgrade to a simple big zoom camera that takes great shots. Not a digital SLR! What would you recommend I look out for. Any tips on the best sorts of features that matter. I don’t want to have to think about anything technical when I’m taking pics.

A. And why should you? Technical mumbo jumbo should be at the back of your mind while you’re snapping away, being creative, or trying to coerce your subject into looking their best. We’ve rounded up three of the simplest, and best point and shoot cameras around. They’re all small, they’re all easy to use, and all produce fantastic photos.

Sony CyberShot DSC-T77Solution 1: Best for pure simplicity
It’s easy to become daunted by the array of snappers out there, but cameras don’t get much easier to use than the Sony CyberShot DSC-T77. It’s a super-slim snapper that not only boasts 10 megapixels, but image stabilisation, face recognition, smile detection, anti-blink technology and scene recognition. All you need to do is press the shutter!
Best option: Sony CyberShot DSC-T77 – From £170

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28Solution 2: Best for super-zoom
You asked for a tip-top super-zoom compact, and we’ve found one! The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 boasts a whopping 18x optical zoom, as well as image stabilisation to avoid blurry shots. There’s also ultra-high light sensitivity, so it’ll produce good quality shots, even in dim conditions! It’s a great all-rounder. Ready for your close up?
Best option: Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 – From £206

Kodak EasyShare V610Solution 3: Best for size
You said you didn’t want to cart around a huge SLR, so we’ve rooted out the smallest and lightest compact possible. The Kodak EasyShare V610 weighs in at just 160 grams, but still offers 6 megapixels and 5x zoom. Sure, they’re not the highest specs around, but then you’ll never have trouble fitting the Kodak in your jeans pocket!
Best option: Kodak EasyShare V610 – From £305
