Asus Eee Top unboxed, poked and pawed
November 11, 2008 by Insider Staff
The Asus EEE PC series of netbooks has revolutionised the laptop landscape, but now the company is upturning the desktop computer too by putting everything into one budget box… with a touchscreen too! The Asus Eee Top is out very soon, but we’ve got our hands on one early and unboxed it – get the details inside.
Coming in the same packaging as the famous tiny laptops, the 16-inch all-in-one monitor comes with a micro minimalist mouse and keyboard, and boots Windows XP out of the box. But the Apple iMac killing feature is the touchscreen, and it works superbly, making this the perfect compact set-up the living room or kitchen. See for yourself in the gallery of hands-on photos below.
It’s the same pastel styling as the Eee PC series, but is it as easy to use?
Opening it up, we’ve got the 16-inch touchscreen PC inside, ready to plug in and play.
The keyboard is a slimline USB number, but it feels rock solid in your hands; there’s no breaking this.
Unwrapping the monitor, it looks great – but how does it display?
Setting it up is a matter of plugging the keyboard, mouse and power adaptor in, then flicking it on. Windows XP starts up automatically.
XP comes customised with a special touchscreen toolbar, which makes tapping your way around a cinch.

Touchtastic
Not many desktops costing come with an easy-to-use touchscreen panel.
All in one
No fiddly cables – speakers, processor, hard drive, monitor, they’re all inside the sleek white shell, which props itself up nicely with a handsome kickstand.
Budget box
It’s not powerful, and it doesn’t even have a DVD drive. But it does only cost around £400. For a touchscreen desktop, that’s a serious bargain.
Going up against
Apple iMac – The Top takes more than a little inspiration from Apple’s workstation beauty.
HP Touchsmart – Another desktop touchscreen comp.
Apple Mac Mini – Similar specs, similar price – it’s just missing the monitor.
