When the LG steam range entered the fray it signaled a renaissance in the washing machine world, introducing a range of colours mocking plain white washers. But is it enough to get our glasses all steamed up? Or is it just a load of hot air?

Pros
LG’s steam direct drive washing machines caused a sensation when they first launched, by introducing not just steam, but a range of colours as well. The latest model now has a massive 9kg drum and comes in black white or silver. An injection of steam into the wash improves efficiency and will even freshen and recrease clothes that don’t need a full wash. Meanwhile, the direct drive does away with the old belt system and makes it run a lot more quietly.

Cons
Amazingly, the big drum doesn’t make this machine any wider, but it is a little deeper, so make sure you measure up carefully. The steam feature requires it’s own hot water feed as well, so you will need to plumb in both pipes.

Overall
LG has maintained the momentum with its latest washers and enhanced the steam feature to provide more options for refreshing your clothes, which could save you a wash or two. The big drum makes it much more efficient for larger households and it hasn’t meant foregoing the prized A+ energy rating. But the Direct Drive range also breaks new ground in terms of style. The electronic touchscreen controls are from the world of home electronics, not kitchen appliances. It even has a pause/play button to start your wash!
